The Canva Trick That Makes Your Designs Look So Much Better: Match & Move

You know those Canva designs where everything seems to move perfectly from one slide to the next? It looks like it took way more effort than it actually did.

The secret is Match & Move, one of my favorite Canva features for turning a simple design into something that feels polished, intentional, and a little more professional. And the best part? You don't need complicated animation software to do it.

What Is Match & Move in Canva?

Match & Move is a Canva transition that recognizes matching elements between two pages and automatically animates them from their position on one page to their position on the next. Instead of one slide disappearing and another simply appearing, your elements actually move between the two.

Think of it like giving Canva a starting point and an ending point—and letting Canva handle everything in between. You can use it to make text slide across the screen, resize images, move graphics around a layout, create smooth before-and-after effects, or make an entire design feel more dynamic.

How to Use Match & Move

The easiest way to understand it is to try it.

1. Create your first page

Start with the design you want to animate. Add your text, images, graphics, shapes, or whatever other elements you want to use.

This will be the starting position of your animation.

2. Duplicate the page

Instead of creating your next page from scratch, duplicate the first one.

This is important because Canva needs to recognize the same elements across both pages for the effect to work properly.

3. Move your elements

Now for the fun part.

On your duplicated page, rearrange the elements you want to animate.

Move your text to another side of the screen. Make an image larger. Shift a graphic into the center. Change the composition completely if you want.

You're essentially designing what you want the end of the animation to look like.

4. Add Match & Move

Click the transition between your two pages and select Match & Move.

Canva will recognize the matching elements and automatically animate them from their original positions into their new ones.

Hit play and watch it come together.

That's it.

Why Match & Move Works So Well

Good animation doesn't need to mean more animation. Match & Move works because the movement feels connected to the design rather than added on top of it.

Instead of having five different elements flying onto the screen from five different directions, you're creating movement that naturally guides someone's eye from one composition to another. That's especially helpful when you're creating social content.

You have a very small window to get someone to stop scrolling. A little intentional movement can make a relatively simple graphic feel much more interesting without overwhelming the person watching it.

A Few Ways to Use It

Once you understand how Match & Move works, there are so many ways you can play with it.

Try using it to:

  • Move a headline from large and centered to smaller and off to the side

  • Zoom an image in or out

  • Transition between different parts of a product

  • Create animated typography

  • Reveal information one piece at a time

  • Turn a static carousel concept into a video

  • Create smoother transitions in presentations

  • Animate social media graphics without complicated editing software

You can also duplicate your pages several times and continue repositioning the same elements to create a longer sequence.

One Tip: Keep It Simple

It's very easy to discover Canva animations and suddenly want everything to move. Resist the urge.

The best Match & Move designs usually have a clear focal point. Decide what you want the viewer to notice and let the animation support that. Sometimes moving one or two elements creates a much stronger effect than animating the entire page.

Try It on Your Next Canva Design

The next time you're about to export a static Canva graphic, duplicate the page first. Move a few elements around, add Match & Move, and see what happens. You might end up with an entirely different piece of content—and it'll probably take you less than a minute. Sometimes the smallest design tricks make the biggest difference.
